About

Old Canberrans Hockey Club was founded in 1936, when two teachers, Arthur “Curly” Martin and Les Williams entered two teams from Telopea Park School in the local competition. The name ‘Checks’ by which the teams are generally known, came from the distinctive shirt of black and gold checks on the uniform.

We are a community hockey club that welcomes players regardless of age, gender, background and ability and have teams in the junior and senior, men and women’s competitions and a HookintoHockey program (ages 4-12).

Additional information regarding specific competitions and training times can be found in the Junior Competitions and Senior Competitions pages.

Vision

“Be a leading, enduring hockey club that provides opportunities for players of all ages, genders, backgrounds and abilities by connecting on community and creating the best possible environment to enable the Old Canberrans family to reach its full potential.”

Club Values

• Family – Trust, challenge and support each other.

• Inclusive – Embrace people regardless of age, gender, background or ability.

• Connected – Build strong, successful teams on and off the pitch.

• Success – Strive for excellence in everything we do.

Colin Cooper Foundation (Arthur Martin Fund)

In honour of the clubs principal founder Arthur Martin the club established a fund within the clubs account to support the club’s initiatives for juniors over and above the standard competition and training arrangements covered by playing fees.

Following the death of long term president and lifetime member of Old Canberrans Hockey Club, the Colin Cooper Foundation was established to promote participation and excellence within the club.

The foundation incorporates the previously established Arthur Martin fund to support our Hookin2Hockey and junior programs and includes provisions for individual scholarships for talented and enthusiastic players and officials.
