Country Districts Success

Published Tue 05 Dec 2017

Our Senior Men and Women traveled to the foot of the Blue Mountains to take on the NSW Country District Associations. The carnival was held at Glenbrook Pool for the first time after having to move away from Parramatta Pool.

Our senior women featured a number of experienced players along with a couple of junior players getting their first taste of senior Water Polo. We also welcomed drafts from Southern Highlands, Wagga and Blue Mountains. The girls started off strong with a solid win against Tamworth early on Saturday morning. They then had a close encounter with Central Coast with the game finishing 4-4 after a late controversial penalty shot. We then played the undefeated Newcastle team which again was a hotly contested game finishing 6-6. This put the girls through to the Final on Sunday. The girls didn't have the start they were after being down 6-1 at half time. They however crawled their way back into the game just falling short 6-5 taking home the silver. Mel Taylor was selected in the "Tournament 7" after a fantastic weekend.

The boys took a very young team to Glenbrook with only two players aged 18 or over. The team however has been training and playing locally together for the last couple of years and was a great opportunity to play against older and stronger opposition. The boys started the weekend with a 7-7 draw with Tamworth which was made up of a number of experienced Country Water Polo players. They then went on to have convincing wins over Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands before going down to Central Coast in the final game of Saturday. The team's last round game was on Sunday morning against ladder leaders Newcastle, which comprised of many Hunter Hurricanes National League players. The boys performed well above their weight to have a close 3-1 loss to the eventual winners. This put the boys in the play-off for bronze. In what was an exciting game of Water Polo with the lead swaying both ways, the boys found themselves down by 2 with 3 minutes to go. After some strong defense and capitalizing on some counter attack opportunities the boys leveled the game at 6-6 with 30 seconds to go. The boys were gifted a penalty shot right on full time to put the game away without the need for penalties, taking home Bronze medals. Nick Taylor was named in the Tournament 7 after a great tournament and showing great leadership at a young age.

Well done to both teams on a great weekend! Thanks to Water Polo NSW for organising a great event and having us involved again!
