The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is committed to providing opportunities for youth sailors to further develop their sailing skills, knowledge and experience.
The Club’s new fleet of Elliott 6s and existing fleet of Force 24 inshore keelboats offers developing and experienced sailors from the Hunter & north coast regions the opportunity to receive professional coaching and quality competition in inshore keelboat racing. The program also aims to provide valuable experience and transition opportunities from dinghies into keelboats for both fleet and match racing.
The Squad programs are mostly conducted during the winter months – from May to September – so as not to conflict with summer dinghy racing programs. Coaching may also be conducted mid-week after school/uni to again not affect club racing.
Squad members are eligible to be selected into NCYC Performance Teams to represent the club at a number of youth keelboat boats events in both fleet racing and match racing.
For 2019 the Youth Keelboat Program will be divided into three components:
- Youth Development Squad - Fleet Racing
- Youth Intermediate Squad - Fleet Racing & Introduction to Match Racing
- Youth Advanced Squad - Match Racing
Sailors are not required to have already formed crews, individual sailors register for the Squad Program and coaches will work with and select teams for the various events available.
