Transition to Yachting (Start Racing)
We are pleased to welcome participants to our Transition to Yachting (Start Racing) program for SPRING 2024.
This course will include six training sessions, conducted over the dates as listed above.
Session times for the first four weeks are 5:00pm to 8:00pm. For the last two weeks, session times are 4:00pm to 7:00pm when we participate in the start and race to the heads of the Club twilight race.
Training will be conducted on the yacht Aurora, a 40ft IOR Farr 40. The yacht will carry two qualified instructors, two sailing mentors and course participants. All sailing will be done within Newcastle Harbour, there is no offshore sailing during the course. The course will include onshore theory session(s) relative to the weather experienced during the course and the safety/risk assessment to being on-water in the prevailing conditions.
Participant number - maximum 6. The NCYC Sailing Academy abides by the Australian Sailing instructor:student ratios, hence places are strictly limited. To avoid disappointment, we recommend registering early.
The registration fee for this course is $450.
Course Pre Requisite
Participants must have completed a Start Crewing and Start Helming course, or have attended at least four Women's Sailing 4-week courses, or have been a member of the Youth Development Squad (minimum age 16 years) in order to have the skills and knowledge to progress to the Start Racing syllabus. Sailors will an equal level of exisiting skills may be considered for the program.
Twilight Racing Continuation Option
Following on from the six-week course, there is an additional opportunity to continue on, for a further two weeks as part of a crew onboard an NCYC Members yacht in the club offshore twilight races.
Payment Plans
We do offer weekly payment plans in order to pay for the course in equal instalments over a nominated period. Full payment must be received prior to the course commencement date. Please contact the Sailing Office to arrange set up.
Australian Sailing logbook
Each participant will require an Australian Sailing logbook. If you do not already have one from a previous course, please contact the Sailing Office to purchase. Logbook price $15.00
Course Attendance
This is a six-week course and, in order to satisfy one of the requirements for issue of the certification, you must attend a minimum of 12 hours. If you miss a session we dont have a comparable session to offer a catch up. Please see our Academy FAQs for full details of Terms & Conditions.

Course Overview
You will now learn the basic racing rules of sailing, skills and tactics and gain an understanding of what is expected of a racing crew on a small boat.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident and the skills, knowledge and experience gained from the Start Helming and Crewing courses, as well as the Spinnakers course.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin racing in a keelboat. Perfect for those wishing to take up some twilight racing at your local club.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Racing completion certificate.
