WPV Summer State League Update
We are now two rounds into the WPV Summer State League and isn't it great to be back and playing water polo again on warm summer nights! We hope everyone is having as much fun as it looks and is now getting settled into teams and meeting new team mates.
Thank you for all your patience while we have had to shuffle teams over the last few weeks including dealing with ongoing illness and isolation requirements! Unfortunately this is likely to be an on-going case across all teams and grades, so while we will do our best to limit disruptions, please understand these challenges while we try to do the best to cover all teams and grades suitably!
There have been some really encouraging results so far with most teams coming away with wins in the first two rounds, but we need to make sure we are getting along to training in particular on Sunday afternoon so that we are able to work more with our team mates!
Polo by the Pier
After missing the tournament last year due to Covid-19, it was excellent to see new and old faces come together for a fun day of water polo in Portsea on Saturday 5th of February.
MUPolo Black (Men’s Social), led by James Etherington, played against a strong Otters outfit to win their competition. This was the first tournament for the club for many of the team members. Sina Zarei scored an epic penalty shot in the final and was awarded MVP of the team on the day. Congratulations to James, Sina, Spencer Gordon, Brendan Murphy, Ivan Kwok, Avi Abraham, Harry Atkins, Piers Clinton & Jason Mackaway.
MUPolo Blue (Men’s Championship) qualified for the final after a penalty shootout against NYP Dragons. Unfortunately they could not defend their 2020 title finishing second behind Woodsy and the Pussycats, while the MUPolo Women’s team finished third in the competition, after two great games against Monash Uni and Victoria's Secrets.
Thank you to Old Melburnians Water Polo Club for putting on a great day and we are already looking forward to next year!
Barefoot Bowls - THIS SATURDAY
This Saturday MUPolo is ditching water polo for barefoot lawn bowls! Join us at the Fitzroy Victoria Bowling and Sports Club for an afternoon BBQ and barefoot bowls session.
Things will kick things off from 12:30 with access to the bowling green between 1pm and 3pm! We have access to BBQs so please BYO protein and the club will provide salads, rolls, and sides. We will also have a couple of eskys to keep things cool and fresh. Drinks can be purchased at the bar.
Please check the Facebook Event for more information, otherwise see you there!
Laps for Life 2022
For the third year, our club will be participating in Laps for Life, a great initiative that raises money for Lifeline to support, promote and bring awareness to youth mental health in Australia. Laps for Life is not only an excellent opportunity to support Lifeline, but also to build fitness after a long period out of the pool and catch up with clubmates new and old.
Last year, we swam over 200km and raised over $2500 for this great cause. This year, we will aim to meet - and hopefully surpass -this goal!
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, follow this link to join our team or to donate. You can swim and/or raise as little or as much as you’d like, simply set a lap goal and get swimming!
Please contact Phoebe Nadenbousch if you have any queries.
Australian Water Polo League - Victorian Phoenix
Last weekend was the first hit out for the recently formed Victorian Phoenix! It's great to have an AWL team back in Victoria this year, and we look forward to supporting them through the season. Special mention to Club Member and current University of Melbourne Student Lucy Haig (WSL1) who has been selected in the AWL squad.
Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the season's fixture, with many games scheduled to be played at MSAC, MUPolo will host a social event around one of the games.
