Presidents Address -May 2024

Published Thu 23 May 2024

To Maccabi Basketball friends and family,

In what continues to be a difficult time for our community, I’d like to extend my best wishes to everyone impacted by the current conflict in Israel. Now more than ever shows the importance of being part of a sporting club and community such as our own, which I hope has provided some level of comfort during this time. It’s great to see basketball continuing to bring friends and families together, both during the weeks and on the weekends. It’s also great to see our Maccabi teams represent our clubs so well during this period, both on and off the court.

It's been a busy start to our Term 2 EBL and CSBA competitions in recent weeks, with plenty of teams and coaches joining Maccabi Basketball for this season. We’ve increased the size of our junior base by 13 teams this season, taking us to a total of 40 teams from the U8’s to U18’s across both EBL and CSBA competitions. This is a testament to the strong level of coaching led by head coach Sylvester, who ensures all teams are allocated appropriate coaches for their level and age group.

It’s also a pleasure to see the stocks of our girls teams continue to rise, with girls participating in 13 of our junior teams across all age groups! Our girls program is one we hope to continue to grow, given just 4 years ago we only had 1 girls team take the court regularly.

I’m proud to announce our club was recently awarded by Maccabi Australia the Maccabi NSW ‘Club of the Year’ Award for the second consecutive year. This is a result of the work of our coaches, managers, committee and of course our players. It’s amazing seeing basketball continue to thrive across the Jewish community, seeing the number of Maccabi kids on the court growing year on year.

Our seniors program continues to be a successful point of transition for our juniors, with the addition of 3 new teams since the start of this year. This includes the addition of a mixed team, the first time females have formally participated in the seniors program in over a decade! Further, Maccabi Basketball now has 3 teams in the division 1 CSBA men’s league, an increase on the 2 from last year after the Maccabi Heat won the Division 2 men’s title earlier this month. For any adults keen to get on the court in any capacity, reach out to our seniors manager Matt Bozic at matt@maccabibasketballnsw.com

Finally, we are so grateful and appreciative to have our 5 major sponsors on board for another 2 years, who are crucial to the ongoing success of our club. We are extremely grateful for their backing in the past and into the future, which allows us to continue to provide our members with a high quality service on and off the court. I'd love for our community, in return, to support these brands when possible, all of which I've included below.
