Course information
We are pleased to welcome participants to our Adult Learn to Sail Program (Start Helming) for November 2024. This course will include four sessions, conducted over the dates as listed above.
All session times are 9:00am to 12:00pm
Training will be conducted on the Club's fleet of Melges 20 keelboats, which carry an Instructor and up to four course participants. The boats will be sailed inshore on the water of Sydney Harbour.
The MHYC Discover Sailing Centre abides by the Australian Sailing instructor:student ratios, hence places are strictly limited. To avoid disapointment, we recommend registering early.
The registration fee for this course is $450
Course Attendance
This is a 4-week course and, in order to satisfy one of the requirements for issue of the certification, you must attend a minimum of 12 hours. If you miss a session, we offer 'Keelboat Catch Up sessions' regularly. Please contact us and we can work out a date to suit you. An additional registration fee applies.

Course Overview
The first step on the Keelboat pathway introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small keelboat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. In the combined course, you will also experience and develop the theory and practical skills to confidently take control on the helm.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat. Learn the basics of crewing and helming, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Crewing and Start Helming completion certificate.
