Under brooding skies, and before a blustery north wind, our intrepid teams racers sallied forth to Balnarring to join battle in the annual regatta against our ancient foes. Resplendent in their shiny (but figure-hugging) rash-vest armour, which was the envy of couturiers around the Bay. (Order yours now!: merchandise@merricks.org)
Alas, success proved elusive in the warm-up races in the morning. But the game plan was beginning to take shape, even as the fans were becoming impatient for some wins, and the coach was being assured that he had the full support of the board. Our crack crews were seeing the gusts on the water like basketballs and trimming the sails and boats expertly.
Omens were encouraging for the C division finals – the door to which the Merricks Magicians had banged down with their performances in the morning. We ventured out as the wind was at its gustiest, only to be summoned ashore – for there had been a reschedule. One of our opposing teams had withdrawn in the face of the conditions! But the hardy Merricks sailors laughed in the face of such timidity (at least metaphorically…!) And before we took to the water for the delayed final, some reinforcements arrived, allowing us to sub on our secret weapon – “Killer” Kris Symons. The reunited father/son combo of Kris and Will led the C grade final from start to finish, and our other two crews finished 3rd and 4th, for an emphatic 8-13 win over the Westernport M&Ms.
Thus did the Merricks Magicians secure the 2024 C division trophy! Our loyal band of merry sailors were Kobe & Craig Langford, Will & Kris Symons, Sarah Porritt and Liam & Tom Clarke – looking tired but elated at the post-regatta presentation, just as the heavens were threatening to burst.
Thanks to Stewart Carter, for refereeing on course all day, and to Peter Balka, Simon Webster, Anthony Brand and Carolyn Johnston for officiating. And to Adam, Marg and all the crew at Westernport YC for running such a fun and well-oiled event, and to Bright Brewery for sponsoring the event.
