Layne Amaru was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia in 1972 intending to stay for just six months. However, she never returned to her country of birth. In New Zealand, Layne played softball for the Saints Club, where her passion for the sport blossomed. Upon settling in Australia, she joined the Bears Softball Club as a player.

After retiring from playing, Layne took on the role of administrator for the Bears Softball Club, succeeding Esther Deason, M.B.E., the Club's Foundation President.

At Melbourne Softball, Layne wore many hats. She represented the MSA (Melbourne Softball Association) as a team member and coach. She also served as the MSA Treasurer for an extended period. This dedication and unwavering contribution were honored with the inaugural Melbourne Softball Association Service Award at Fawkner Park.

Before her passing, Layne ensured that softball, a sport she loved dearly for its camaraderie and joy, would continue to thrive and be cherished by others.
