REFUGE COVE CRUISE

Cat Bay - Westernport Phillip Island (in E to NW) ~33nm;
San Remo (All weather) ~43nm;
Bird Rock Warratah Bay (in NE to SW) ~ 60nm
Fairy Cove, West side of Wilson's Prom (in SE to NE) ~ 90nm
This is a great opportunity to "stretch your wings" in company
with many experienced yachts and power boat skippers
Members who wish to attend but do not have a boat may find places available on yachts or powerboats intending to go. If you are in this position, please advise the commodore.
Likewise, if you want someone on your boat who is experienced, we may be able to assist.
We will have a BRIEFING on a Wednesday night at a time and venue to be advised.
Commodore John Hall will be the cruise official - John Hall - "Wingara II" - 0429 313 211 VHF and HF Callsign "Wingara II"
Radio contact via VHF channel 82 and Distress Channel 16 and HF 2424, 4286 – and monitoring throughout the cruise
Cost: There is no entry cost, but you your boat must be up to CATEGORY 3 Safety (or equivalent for power boats) which may be found here as this is an offshore-coastal event. CAT 3 Safety
Both John Hall and member John Gordon are Club Equipment Auditors with Australian Sailing and can help you ensure that you have what is needed for CATEGORY 3 safety.
It is self-audit, but boats MUST comply and sign a declaration that the boat complies with CAT 3.
The main things needed are:
- ALL Boats
2 anchors and rope or chain
Liferaft
Personal EPIRBS and LIGHTS on Life Jackets
VHF Radio (emergency antennae highly recommended)
Flares (4 Red Para, 4 Red H'held, 4 Orange, 2 white)
First Aid Kit and First Aid Manual
Emergency water (at least 2l/POB/Day for 8 days)
Means of receiving weather reports (eg VHF and AM/FM Radio)
2 or more bilge pumps - manual operable from cockpit with storm boards fitted or all doors closed
- YACHTS
Jackstays
Safety Harnesses and lanyards
Storm Sails
Bosun's Chair
Emergency water
Storm-boards
Whilst we will never be far from the shore, we are in the Bass Strait, and offshore in open waters, so boats and crews must be properly prepared and equipped.
Safety is our No 1 priority - a very close second is of course having fun!

Taking a dinghy tender is recommended - on the deck or on davits - towing is not recommended and may be very unsafe (for the dinghy that is).
