Taming the Tides.

Both Port Phillip and Westernport present challenges when it comes to understanding the influence of the tide on our boating activities.

In Port Phillip the tidal range is not significant being less than 1m most of the time, however the area south of a line roughly from St Leonards to Safety Beach is subject to to a significant tidal stream which can take some getting used to. On top of that there is the trepidation associated with negotiating Port Phillip heads - its not called “The Rip” for nothing.
Westernport has its own challenges. Most people are aware that the tidal range in Westernport can be up to 3m. Run aground at the wrong time and the tide could be falling at 1.5 - 2cm PER MINUTE. A lesser known concern is that the tidal stream in and out of the entrance can run at over 3 knots - makes for very slow going if you get it wrong and almost as treacherous a ride as Port Phillip heads.

Fear not, there is plenty of information available to take the worry out of boating and our presenter will look at the factors involved in planning a trip between the two or just mucking around locally.
