Season 2024 is now well underway, with the senior men’s squad just having its first mid-season bye, which was very welcome to help some players overcome niggling injuries. Both sides have won a game so far, with the senior team perhaps unlucky not to have added to its tally. After 6 games, our senior side have now played 4 of the top 5 teams from 2023, and will play the other finalist (Colac) this Saturday(1 June) at home.
In a great milestone, congratulations to Mitch Day, who played his 150th senior squad game for LFNC against St. Mary’s.
Following grading, our senior women were placed in Division 1. While they have proven very competitive and beat one of the other Div 1 sides in grading, the top teams are very strong. We wish Eliza, John and the team the very best luck for what will no doubt be a challenging year of learning and development.
Grading is also complete for our U/18s, junior boys and girls sides. Their divisional placements are:
U18 Men- Division 2 Rookie Me Cup
U16 Boys Smith- Division 2 Buckleys Cup
U16 Boys Cook- Division 4 Rookie Me Cup
U14 Boys Smith- Division 2 Buckleys Cup
U14 Boys Gillett- Division 6 Mixed
U16 Female Jenkins- Division 1 Epworth Cup
U16 Female Orr- Division 2 Kings Cup
U14 Female Young- Division 2 Kings Cup
We met Grovedale in our annual ‘Spirit of ANZAC’ clash on Sunday 28th April at Bisinella Oval. Yet again, we were blessed with the weather on a day packed with football. As has become typical, we had a terrific crowd on the concourse and around the ground, with the senior men’s game also broadcast by Kingy and the team from K-rock on their streaming channel. In a very pleasing outcome for the Football Section, our senior men beat Grovedale for the very first time since this theme game was launched in 2017. Our U/18s also had an exciting win against Bannockburn. Well done to all sides who represented our club with honour on the day, and thanks so much to Marcus McEwen and the team from Lara RSL, along with Grovedale FNC, for their valued participation and support.
Our 2024 Winter Ball will be held in the Captain’s Room at GMHBA stadium on 22 June. This function is a highlight of our year and we look forward to hosting as many volunteers, coaches, players, members and supporters as possible.Tickets are $150 per person and include a 3-course meal and 4 hours drinks package. Tickets can be purchased until Saturday 1 June. Check out the flyer in the newsletter for a QR code to the ticket portal or contact Carol Stone or Karen Lindorff for more information.
This week will see LSC and Sections conduct an inspection of the Oval 3 pavilion with CoGG representatives. Like us, we’re sure many of you will have seen the ongoing progress with the building since mid-2023 with a mix of interest and anticipation. The wait is almost over, with the handover due incoming days. This initiative will provide the Football section with an unrivalled capability for the Barwon region, providing three competition ovals at the one facility. Our thanks to the CoGG for the provision of this important facility and to the LSC for their advocacy and ongoing support during development.
The Football Section has been assigned the Bar rights for the 2024 GFNL senior finals. This means that we will need plenty of volunteers who hold an RSA to help man the bars and serve our customers. If you can help – even for 1 day –please contact Carol at the club and register your interest. We plan to hold an RSA accreditation evening for those who need to get one. We will need all the help we can get for this lucrative opportunity that only comes round once every 12 years! Please help if you can.
