This year, Midmar’s historic annual endurance race featured two options, a no-swop 6hr version and a compulsory swop-out 9hr version. Race day dawned with a steady breeze that powered some competitors twice around the course before the 5-minute warning for the 6Hr fleet started. And at right about that same time, the wind decided to disappear. The rest of the day ticked by with crews pulling out all sorts of tricks to fill their sails - some relatively successfully.
Kudos to Rudi McNiell, Richard Wendell and Barron Watt for taking Line Honours and completing 9hrs on a 49er, which is an amazing feat. The OGgosh II crew settled for eighth overall as they watched the final flag come down a few hundred meters from the finish line.
Special mention to James Baker, who "bumped" his foot on the second lap while having an argument with the big black Genmac spinnaker. The spinnaker won the argument, and left James with three breaks and two fractures in his foot. He did however sail the whole event, succumbing to the medics only once the race finished.
Overall a wonderful event as always, and we look forward to going back in 2025 to claim the trophy. Thank you to Nick Smart and his team at HMYC. We always enjoy visiting.
