KSYC performs at Midmar Grand Slam

Published Thu 30 Jan 2025

Local sailors descended on the SA Sailing Grand Slam Regatta at Midmar over this weekend, stamping their mark.

Hosted by the Henley Midmar Yacht Club (HMYC), Midmar delivered its usual hot and shifty conditions, making sailing tough and competitive.

Zululand dominated the Optimist class with King Shaka Yacht Club (KSYC) sailor Kai Law (12) taking top honours in 4 out of 5 races.

This performance followed his mid-fleet achievement at the recent Youth Nationals competition in December, proving great gains can be made from hard work and dedication.

If it has sails, Law wants to sail it.

At his age he has already competed in multiple national and regional events including crewing for the last two years in the ORC Offshore Nationals on Keelboats.

A very noteworthy performance came from Henry Nyokanhete (12) sailing for the Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC), who is an example of how SA Sailing and the ZYC Development programme took him from learning to sail to being third in KZN.

In the highly competitive Dart class, ZYC father daughter team Clinton (50) and Madison (12) Wissekerke ran in the front of the fleet, going into the final race of the weekend with one point between themselves and HMYC local Lorrian Wells.

Low and shifty winds meant that local knowledge provided the leg up, leaving team Wissekerke in a very credible second place for the weekend.

All eyes fall to the second Grand Slam event, which is due to be hosted by ZYC later this year.
