I want to try dragon boating!
Our club welcomes new paddlers of all ages (12+) and fitness levels. Signing up for a Dragon Pass allows you the opportunity to try dragon boating for a one month consecutive period. It also allows for participation at a regatta if the regatta falls within the one month trial period, however you must have attended at least two training sessions before being able to participate in a regatta. Our paddling location and paddling times are located on our home page.
How old do I have to be to dragon boat paddler?
You must be at least 12 years old. There is no upper age limit. Our club has members still paddling in their 70s.
How fit do I have to be?
Dragon boating is suitable for all fitness levels. Introductory sessions allow you to paddle at your own pace at your fitness level. As you continue paddling your fitness improves!
If you are not sure about your fitness level to paddle contact your doctor and take their advice.
Likewise, if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or have any medical issues which may affect your physical activity you should see your doctor for a clearance to participate.
What should I wear?
Dragon boating is a casual water sport. You should wear similar clothes that you would wear to a gym. It is likely that you will get splashed and become wet.
You need to wear covered shoes such as crocs, boat shoes, etc to protect your feet especially when entering or leaving the boat.
A hat and sunglasses are a good idea.
You should apply sun protection to any exposed skin.
What do I need to bring?
All equipment is provided for you including a paddle, lifejacket, boat and laughter!
We recommend that you bring a towel and change of clothes in case you get wetter than expected and need to drive home.
Make sure you bring a drink bottle, firm fitting hat & apply sunscreen before hand.
Do I need to be able to swim?
If you are not able to swim at least 50 m in your paddling clothes then you must let the coach and/or sweep of the boat know.
How much does it cost to paddle?
For new paddlers, the first month is free and you can paddle as many times as you like.
To continue paddling after that you will need to join the club.
Membership fees are set annually and consist of the:
- KDBC Membership Fee which covers club membership, coaching, sweeps, and use of all equipment (boats, paddles, PFDs, etc)
- Dragon Boats Victoria fee which covers insurance.
If you wish to paddle in regattas you will need a club uniform (available from the club) and pay regatta fees.
