Teaching Kata Workshop

Seminar Objectives
Kata continues to evolve and grow in importance in Judo around the world. Nage no Kata is no exception. The “Teaching Kata Workshop” will upskill Judo NSW club instructors’s ability to teach the first three sets of Nage no Kata to their students to fulfil the Kata requirements as documented in the Judo Australia grading syllabus for junior and senior Kyu grades. Dale Keogh (6th Dan) and Ernie Wakamatsu (5th Dan) will share teaching techniques learned at the Kodokan and developed by themselves as they teach Black Belt Dan promotion candidates and the Judo NSW State Kata team.

Junior Blue Belt: 1st Set of Nage no Kata
Junior Blue-Brown Belt: 1st and 2nd sets of Nage no Kata
Junior Brown Belt: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sets of Nage no Kata
Senior Green Belt (3rd Kyu): 1st set of Nage no Kata
Senior Blue Belt (2nd Kyu): 1st and 2nd sets of Nage no Kata
Senior Brown Belt (1st Kyu): 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sets of Nage no Kata
Workshop Agenda
Dale and Ernie will explain key points of each of the techniques in the first three sets of Nage no Kata. They will also share exercises to help students understand these key points.
Nage no Kata
First Set, Hand Techniques: Uki-otoshi, Seoi-nage, Kata-guruma
Second Set, Hip Techniques: Uki-goshi, Harai-goshi, Tsuri-komi-goshi
Third Set, Leg Techniques: Okuri-ashi-harai, Sasae-tsuri-komu-ashi, Uchimata
Club instructors should wear white Judogi and bring their own water, as well as pen and paper to take notes. Some hand-outs will be provided.
COVID-19 prevention procedures for sports will be followed.
