Victorian Impulse Newsletter - Feb 2025

Published Mon 10 Feb 2025

Hi Impulse sailors,

Looking forward to the Victorian State Championships at Altona, 8 - 10 March in a few weeks time.  The club is well liked among Impulse sailors for its easy parking, friendly company and well run racing.  Altona is a strong Impulse club and is keen to host a great event.

Online Entry and Notice of Race for the Championships are now up on the Impulse website - https://www.revolutionise.com.au/impulsesai.../events/272952.  Early entries are encouraged - entries prior to Mon 17 February go into the draw to have their entry refunded. Enter by 2nd March to receive the early bird discount of $30. Enter in the final week 🙁 and pay the full entry - adult $190, junior $160.

Unpowered camping is available at the club, $50 per site for the weekend.  Welcome BBQ on the Saturday after sailing is free for sailors.  There's a spit roast dinner planned for Sunday night, $30 a head - you can book when you enter the series.

The Victorian AGM will be held on the Saturday evening 8th March at 5:45pm or as near to that as practicable depending on when we finish sailing.

The weekend before the States, Saturday 1st March,  Altona is putting on a day of short course racing, the Biddy Hu Cup, starting from 11am.  Impulses looking for a bit of practice are most welcome to attend.

Further updates for all events can be found on the Vic Impulse facebook page

See you on the water soon,

Day 3 at the Natinals in Brisbane was a good one for the Vic contingent, Jon Pulham 597 gybing inside Russ Denholm 762 on the way to one of two race wins;  Chas Thompson 616 between the two finished 2nd in this race.  Toby Leppin and Bill Manning not far behind, the red boats to left and right of picture finished 10th and 11th respectively.

39th  Australian Impulse Championship 2025
Darling Point Sailing Squadron, Brisbane, 5th - 11th January

9 Victorians travelled up to Brisbane for the recent Nationals at Darling Point, joining 30 sailors from NSW and Queensland to form a solid fleet of 39 boats.  Racing was close throughout the fleet, the Victorians getting some good results, Chas Thompson 5th overall and Grand Masters Champion, Jon Pulham 6th overall and Seniors Champion, Monica Jones Ladies Champion. Check out the full results.  Plenty of photos and video of the event too, drone footage thanks to Dave Taylor, photos thanks to Lou Hollis and Neale Maynard, they can be found on the Aust Impulse Facebook page via this link.  Some more photos below.

The series was won by class newcomer Mark Bloom from Royal Queensland YC, in a tight contest with last years champion Mark Skelton.  Well sailed guys, and many thanks to Darling Point SS, Oxley SC and the QLD Association for running a great event, we hope to see plenty of Queenslanders and NSW boats at the Altona Nationals in 2026.
Clockwise from top left:  Russell enjoyed the series in his immaculate home built boat;   Ben Johnson rounding the bottom mark - there were lots of crowded mark roundings;  Monica right up near the front approaching the gybe mark in race 6;  Grand Masters Champion Chas Thompson was super quick downwind,  Paul Farrell storning home to finish second in race 4.

Below, top to bottom:  Mic Wright powering through the chop;   Toby hiking hard and making it look easy;   Bill Manning hunting down another opponent and keeping the boat nice and flat.

Victorian Traveller's Series 2024 -  Final Results after 3 drops

The 2024 Traveller's season wrapped up wtih a fantastic couple of day's sailing at South Gippsland YC on the Australia Day weekend.  The results have been calculated on the traditional low point scoring system with three drops - thinking this next season we might use a high points scoring system that rewards those who travel the most rather than those who get a good result in one or two heats.
