Step 1/6: Let's get started

IMPORTANT!

  • If you have been a member of our club (or any club) across Australia in the past few years, your details (including Australian Sailing Number) should be in our system. If you don't know your Australian Sailing Number, you can look it up here: AS Number Finder
  • Links to register for sailing are at the bottom of this page in blue.

Membership & Registration

  1. Members will be minimum 8 years of age – unless by prior arrangement. Please contact the club if this affects you.
  2. Junior Member – under 18 years at registration. Any junior member must always have an adult responsible for them present at the club while they are there and are participating in our activities (you can nominate a responsible adult using our form on the HKSC website).
  3. Members must show a level of competency in water – ability to swim at least 50 metres with or without a flotation aid.
  4. Sailing activity for Learn to Sail (LTS) will commence at 9:15 and will conclude at approx. 11:30. Parent/carers need to be on site and actively participate during setup and packup routines for LTS & 2+.
  5. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Sailing Club is a volunteer run community based club. We rely entirely on volunteers to operate our sailing activities. The operation of our canteen each week not only provides food for our sailors but the funds raised help us to operate our club.
  6. Each parent/carer will be expected to assist in the canteen at least twice in a season. You will be notified of the weeks you are rostered to fulfill this important task.
  7. Full payment of fees must be received before participation in any sailing activity organised by the club. This is an insurance requirement.
  8. Parent/carer consent for under 18s and declarations must be completed before membership is confirmed (see below).
  9. If your sailors are racing and you want them in the 2+ training program please register them as 2+ not racing. 2+ sailors need their own boat or need to charter one from the club.

Parent/Carer/Volunteer Registration

  • If you are a parent/carer please register as a Parent/Carer/Volunteer – this will have you covered by the AS insurance policy if you are volunteering with us and need to make a claim. It also helps with communications, etc.
  • Most of you will already have an Australian Sailing number which can be found with the AS number finder. If you don't have an AS number then register as a new member.

RISK WARNING, LIABILITY and CONSENT

RISK WARNING

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Police & Community Youth Sailing Club (HKSC) and the NSW RMS, pursuant to the Civil Liability Act 2002, issue jointly, to all persons wishing to participate in the sailing activities conducted by HKSC, this Risk Warning:

Participants are warned that, regardless of the precautions, which might be taken by reasonable and experienced persons, sailing can be a dangerous pursuit and participants are exposed to significant risk of property damage, physical harm and possibly death. As an indication, these risks may include, but are not limited to:

  • The extremes of weather and sea conditions.

  • The potential that control of vessels may be lost, resulting in collision with objects or other vessels.

  • The sudden movement of the vessel at any time and the possibility that participants may fall or be thrown overboard, resulting in drowning.

  • The possibility that participants may be injured by equipment on the vessel.

  • The absence of immediate medical care and the likelihood that significant delays may occur before medical care is available.

  • Exposure to the elements for extended periods including possibility of extreme sunburn or hypothermia.

  • Hard surfaces below the high tide line can become slippery, resulting in slip and fall injuries.

  • Oysters and other sharp marine creatures are commonplace in the area and can result in significant cuts and injury.

  • Sharp objects can be hidden in sand or weed below the water which can cut or pierce feet or other parts of the body, and, as area includes public beach, includes risk of injury from needle stick.

Participants are warned that regardless of HKSC and the NSW RMS’s best intentions, they may be unable to render assistance to participants who are in distress. Participants are warned to consider the above risks and all other risks before deciding to participate in any HKSC sailing event. Participants are also advised that although HKSC is covered by a current public liability insurance policy, this cover does not extend to participants. Any participant who considers they have a need for
insurance must make their own private arrangements with an insurer.

REDUCING RISK

You can help reduce risk to yourself while sailing by always following the following guidelines:

  • Always wear footwear while sailing or on the club premises
  • Always wear a life-vest and adequate sun protection
  • Always check the weather forecast before going sailing. You are responsible for the decision of whether to sail or continue sailing and for ensuring the people on your boat are competent for the conditions.
  • Wear warm clothes and carry drinking water.
  • Beware of flapping sails and spars.
  • The Club is not responsible for supervising minors while ashore. This is the responsibility of their parents or delegated adult.

LIABILITY

The attention of all participants, in HKSC sailing activities, is drawn to the above risk warning in addition to the Racing Rules of Sailing promulgated by World Sailing, the world governing body for the sport of sailing (Part 1 Fundamental Rules and Rule 4 that covers the decision to race).

Each participant acknowledges that he or she:
