Junior Athletics (13-20s)

Hornsby District Athletics Club operates across all age groupings offered by the LANSW/ANSW partnership and athletes in the 13s to 20s age groups are encouraged to have a go at the full range of offerings this provides. This age category is referred to as 'Juniors' in the events calendar and messaging from LANSW and ANSW.

Our Philosophy

Our aim for athletes in this age range is for them to have fun, build a love for sport, continue skill development and start to have an exposure to the wider athletics community beyond the Little Athletics world. The focus remains on participation and growth as we believe that the most important outcome is athletes who want to keep doing sport because they enjoy it. We then hope that they stick with athletics and our club through our U20s, Opens and even Masters age groups.

Training and Competitions

Athletes in the juniors age category will continue to enjoy the traditional Saturday mornings at Ern Holmes Oval as their core offering, where athletes come along and have fun learning and competing with their age groups each week. For more information visit our Little Athletics website.

In addition to Saturday mornings, there are a range of other events that we strongly encourage athletes in this age category to try out. These events can be good fun and also give the juniors a chance to compete alongside our Seniors and Masters Athletes. Events include:

  • ANSW Treloar Shield Events - 6 rounds of casual team based competitions held on Saturday afternoons in September to December. These are entry level events open to people of all levels where you can select the track and field events you would like to enter and have a relaxed opportunity to compete beyond Saturday morning competitions. We encourage athletes of all ages and levels to have a go at the Treloar Shield and most importantly to contribute some points to the team championship
  • Zone to State Competition Pathway - Championship events where athletes can qualify through each level and if successful make it to State. These are a good opportunity for further competition and can be fun whether you proceed to the next level or not
  • Other ANSW Events - a range of other ANSW events will be held throughout the season including the State Relays and the State Combined Event. We aim to send teams and individuals along to each of these, so keep an eye out as we advertise them during the season

Community and Collaboration

Hornsby District Athletics also welcomes junior athletes from other clubs, who are keen to participate in our teams for the ANSW events mentioned above. We are developing collaborations with several local clubs who do not traditionally participate in the ANSW events and are keen to continue to do this, knowing that we are stronger together and can provide better opportunities for all our athletes this way. Athletes should continue to register with their primary club, but can then nominate Hornsby as their 'second' club and thereby join us for team events such as Treloar and State Relays.  This will also grant you access into the Hornsby Athletics family and you be welcomed as such and cheered on with great gusto, whether you are in your own club colours or the Hornsby orange.  If this is of interest, email president@hdlac.org.au to find out more.
