Tom Slingsby Claims Moth World Title

Published Wed 18 Dec 2019

After a near perfect score-card of 1st places and one 2nd, GSC sailor Tom Slingsby claimed the 2019 Moth World Championship Title in Perth, Western Australia with a day to spare. This comes after he claimed the National Championship Title in the lead up regatta. After a total of 13 races in the qualifying and finals series, Tom came away with 12 bullets and one 2nd place in the qualifying race to Matt Chew.

“I just had good speed, I was starting well and I was just trying not to explode the boat, which I’ve done a lot in the past,” he said. “It feels amazing, the Moth Class I love it, I’ve been doing it since 2010, I’ve got so many good friends in the fleet."

“I love the development and playing with the boat. I’m a Laser sailor and I’ve come over to this and I find it really enjoyable. I just somehow got the right package with the North Sails, Exocet boat, and CST rigs, and I was off.”

With just two races scheduled on the final race-day today, Tom is positioned in an unbeatable 1st place on 11 points, with Sail GP team mate Kyle Langford in second overall on 22 points and Tom Burton in third place on 25 points. Tom is a huge inspiration to many of our sailors at GSC. Recently he delivered the Sail GP inspire program to some of our junior sailors in the Wasp class where he said he would “give the Moth Worlds a real good crack this time around”. A month later and it looks like he did just that. Congratulations Tom!
