Smooth Sailing From Foils to Monohull

Published Tue 02 Jul 2019

From the Sailing GP  to the Etchells World Championships, Tom Slingsby is the definition of an inspirational sailor.
Tom recently competed in the 2019 Etchells World Championships held in Corpus Christi, Texas last week. In a 37 boat fleet, with multiple world champions from around the world, Australia had 4 boats finish in the top 5.

After a 9 race series, Slingsby sailing Magpie with Graeme Taylor and James Mayo finished off the series on a high winning individual races from race 5 onwards. They finished second overall, only to fellow Australians Ian Murray, Colin Beashel and Richard Allanson.
This was an outstanding result, showing how he can switch from high tech super foilers to tactical Etchell monohulls in just over a week.

Tom recently said "Really fun week at the etchell worlds. We started slow (maybe sailing the fastest boat in the world last week wasn’t great prep for this class) but we came through winning the last 5 races to narrowly lose to @iainmurlan , Beasho and @rjallanson who were very deserving winners. Last week I was steering a F50 and this week I was on the bow of a etchell. I’m really enjoying all the different racing I’m fortunate enough to do. A huge thank you to our team James Mayo, @gt10001 , @vicpryce and @mattchew83 for being our whipping boy all week. Now I’m off home for a few days before heading to Swedeto join the RC44 @nikasailingteam for the world titles".

Congratulations Tom.
