Slingsby Swings At Sail GP-Sydney

Published Wed 04 Mar 2020

The first round of the Sail GP series was held over the weekend with plenty of action out on the water on the F50’s. Sydney was the first city to host one of the five rounds in the SailGP Series. With a total of seven nations with some of the world’s best sailors competing, it was an event not to miss.

Helmed by former GSC sailor and an inspirational athlete Tom Slingsby, Team Australia made a great comeback on the second day of the series to qualify into the final match race against Team GBR helmed by Ben Ainslie. Tom said team Australia improved on the second race day despite the technical issues which resulted in a penalty at the start of the match race.
Despite this, team GBR had a tremendous regatta taking out 4 of the 5 fleet races and winning the match race against Australia to win the first round of the series. Fellow Australian sailor Nathan Outteridge who was helming for Team Japan narrowly missed out on competing in the final match race but came away with a comfortable third place in tough competition.

The next round of the series will take place from 3-4th May in San Francisco. We wish Tom and his team all the best for the remainder of the exciting series.
