Weekly Update 25/09/17

Published Mon 25 Sep 2017

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Brad Smith has been nominated by Rowing NSW for the Rowing Australia inaugural 2017 Participation Ambassador Award. Brad shared his nomination letter which said:

The inaugural Participation Ambassador Award recognises the significant impact, leadership, and positive influence by an individual on rowing participation and development. Nominations for this award were sought from all States and Territories then voted on by a panel comprising a RA Board member, a State Councillor, the Rowing Australia CEO and the National Coach Development Education Officer.

Rowing Australia appreciate and value your commitment to our sport and in particular within NSW and at Glebe Rowing Club. Your effort and passion to promote rowing ensures that the sport can continue to grow through giving more people the opportunity to row.

The nomination alone is a wonderful and well deserved acknowledgement of the energy and enthusiasm Brad brings to the sport. We are so fortunate that he brings this to Glebe RC. I’m sure all members will join me in congratulating Brad on this significant nomination.

If you are interested in joining a few Glebe rowers at the 2017 Rower of the Year Awards when the Participation Ambassador will be announced, please let me know as soon as possible so we can coordinate at table/s. Details at https://www.revolutionise.com.au/rowingaus/events/9678/

This week’s roundup from Brad:

Learn to Row

The second LTR for the season will run from 8 to 27 October from 8.30am to 10.30am for 4 weeks. We still need volunteers.

If you can lend a hand, please contact ltr@gleberowingclub.org.au  We generally cap the course at 16 participants.

You will have noticed the new banners on the front of the Club house to attract new participants and generate interest in the club from the local community.

Regattas

Head of the Shoalhaven - Two crews from GRC tackled the 6.5km course down the Shoalhaven River this year. An incoming tide slowed all crews up over the last 3 km on a warm morning. Check our Facebook page for photos!

The Open 8+ took line honours and easily the fastest time of the day. Well done!  Our Men’s quad got the fifth fastest time but just went down to a younger Leichhardt crew in their division.

Shoalhaven Sprints - Over the very short course of 400m going with the tide this time resulted in some very quick races. Glebe won every one of its races! A special mention to Max in his U17 race, where he led from start to finish to earn his first regatta win. I’m sure there will be plenty to come this season. Well done Max.

We would like to welcome a new lightweight single scull into the Club. It is rated up to 72kg and will be for general use. It is competition weight at 14.2 kg, not new but looks pretty good. As we don’t yet have a name for it, in the interim it will show in the booking system as New-72. We are looking for a few more singles to add to our fleet this year.

Shed Update

Thanks to the all Members who have volunteered for the Accessory clean up this Tuesday evening starting at 6pm. This will allow us to accurately assess what we need to order for the upcoming season. I know the Oar painting evening was filled with many laughs, some music and general ability to get to know other Members.

We will be moving the hose located by the door to a more central location to dry out the side entrance area. We will also make this more accessible with less obstructions over the coming weeks.

Ergos - we have placed a bucket close to the ergos with some chux clothes and spray. These will be replaced with disposable wipes very shortly. We want to look after these new ergs so after you an ergo, please wipe the it down and clean it.

Coaching

The Club runs a number of Open Coaching sessions each week where everyone  is welcome to attend. The times and days are below. We do ask that you let us know prior to the day so we can expect you. If you cannot attend any of these times but still want some coaching, feel free to ask Brad for further assistance captain@gleberowingclub.org.au or 0423 311 242 . We are currently looking at ensuring the Sunday Club Row continues at 7am, and the possibility of adding Thursday morning once Head of Yarra is over.
