350 Games for Rebecca Lane

Published Fri 17 Nov 2023

This week we celebrate a huge 350 games for A Grade premiership pitcher Rebecca Lane.

Fun fact: with this game Bec will overtake Tash Howard (349), the A grade pitcher who passed the baton on to her, to hold the outright 2nd highest Giants games total behind Dianne Dibben (395).

What is it about Giants that made you choose our club this season?
The People. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and accommodating. Its good to be back 😊

When did you start playing softball, and how many years have you played?
I think the 95/96 season was my first season playing right through until the 08/09 season when I took a break from softball and started growing my own team haha

How many clubs have you played for?
I have played for two different clubs in different associations. I did a small stint of 2 seasons for Tigers at CDSA after a 6 year break before coming home to Giants in 2022

Does/did anyone else in your family play softball?
My mum played briefly, and my kids have given softball a go but sadly they didn't love it like I do.

Do you prefer batting or fielding?
I prefer to field. Batting has never been my strength.

Which position is your favourite?
Catcher or do I have to say pitcher 😉
I started out as a catcher before I was thrust into the pitchers circle a few seasons into my softball journey and once I got the hang of pitching it soon became my favourite position.

Who have been your most influential coaches over the years?
There are two who stand out:
My first coach Pam Sims, I turned up to my first training session with Giants as a shy 9 year old who barely said boo and it was Pam (and Carol) who saw that there was a little potential in that shy girl and convinced my Mum to let me keep at softball and eventually they nurtured and developed my love for the game.
And Peter Sewell. Peter coached the A grade side - as a 12/13 year old all I wanted to do was play in that A grade team and I always put my hand up to sit on the bench and eventually I'd get to go on the field. I slowly earnt my spot in the team and a couple of seasons later when the A grade pitcher had retired I’d earnt my place as the A grade pitcher (and for the shy 8 year old girl that started back in 1996 it was my career highlight to be the starting pitcher in an A grade grand final at 16)

Who have been your most influential teammates over the years?
I have had a lot of influential teammates of the years, way too many to list and remember really. But one who stands out and I'll never forget the time and effort she put into helping develop me as a pitcher is Hidi Bet.

Who do you love playing with?
Everyone.

What is your biggest achievement in softball?
Being the starting pitcher in a scoreless A grade grand final. Still one of my greatest achievements is being a part of the team that kept Kangas scoreless.

Do you have any goals you’d still like to reach?
Maybe we'll aim for 400 games 😂

What does it mean to you to reach 350 games with Giants?
What a milestone. Definitely not something I thought I'd achieve. I truly do love Giants and I am so glad I dug the glove out of storage and got back on the diamond.

🕰️ Bec will be taking the diamond at 2pm against Bluejays, followed by a celebration in the clubrooms from 3:30pm. All welcome to join us and celebrate 🥳
