History

The Figtree-Unanderra Hockey Club was formed in 1931. It is the oldest surviving hockey club in the Illawarra region. Founded by Police Constable Small, the local policeman and Miss Mavis Rodgers. The young men of the area played football but the young girls had no organized sport and so a hockey club was formed. The first games were played in 1932. These early beginnings, at times, required tripping to distant fields by horseback. From this humble start, a legacy of passion for the game was born.

To add depth to the Illawarra competition, in 1949, there was a split into two separate clubs, Figtree Women's and Unanderra Women's Hockey Clubs. In 2014, the clubs decided to rejoin in order to combine the resources of the two clubs and maximise opportunities which could be made available to their junior members. Together, the clubs can boast a total of forty three 1st grade women's premierships and the Figtree Club, six years of 1st/2nd/3rd grade trifectas.
