Fencing  Mid South Under 20 Championships 2021

This competition is open to all fencers who were under 20 years old on the 1st January 2021.  It is suitable for 13+ years old including secondary school students. (Fencers must be at least 13 years old on the day of the event- see FeNZ minimum age policy on fencing NZ website) If you are not sure whether the competition is appropriate for you/ your child please check with your coach.

We welcome competitors from other regions of New Zealand to fence in this competition.

Participants must be affiliated members of Fencing New Zealand who have paid their full membership fee for 2021  year. If you are not yet a member you can click on the link below and become one.

If you were a full member in 2020, your 2021 membership is discounted.

Fencing New Zealand and Fencing Mid South 2021 Membership

Competition Format:
Format: First Round: poules with bouts to five hits. Second Round: Direct Elimination to 15 hits. B finals will be fenced for events with 8+ competitors.
All weapons will also be run as mixed age if there are fewer than six competitors registered in each age group/gender.


The non-combativity rule t.124 will apply. 
Covid-19 
While there is a risk of Covid-19 in the community and New Zealand is at Alert Level one or higher the following additional rules and protocols will be followed:


  • Fencers, coaches, officials and spectators who are sick or have any Covid symptoms should withdraw from the competition and stay away from the venue.
  • The DT has the right to refuse entry to a competitor, coach, official or spectator who is showing signs of being unwell. This will be determined by a medically trained officer who will administer a temperature check. If the result comes back over 38C+ they shall be removed from the competition.
  • Fencers equipment & whites must be clean and recently washed.
  • Fencers will be provided with a box for their equipment to be left at weapons control to be checked. 
  • There is to be no sharing of fencing equipment or water bottles.
  • Please sign in with the government Covid Tracer App when you enter the venue
  • The change to rule t.122 will apply. Fencers will not shake hands of their opponent or the referee on the piste but will salute instead. 
  • There is to be no hugging or kissing at the conclusion of both individual or team bouts.
  • Spare weapons/ body wires need to be kept either in a piste bag or neatly at the end of the piste. They need to be removed by the fencer at the end of each bout.
  • Hand sanitiser will be at each piste for use before fencers start poules & DE rounds
  • QR codes will be posted around the venue that will link fencers to the live competition results. Results won’t be posted in one location within the venue, as we wish to minimise large congregation of fencers/ coaches and spectators.
  • When receiving a medal or trophy, the fencer will pick this up from the tray themselves. 

Medals & Trophies
Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd equal placings. If events are mixed gender 1st and 2nd women will be awarded(depending on numbers).
The Mid South U20 Trophies will also be presented to the 1st placed fencer in each event.

Entry Fee: $30 per weapon.
Entries close Wednesday 9th June, 8pm. Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the organiser. An additional late fee of $5 will be charged for late entries
Entry fees are to be paid at time of entry. Mid South's preferred payment method is by  internet banking.

A service fee will be charged for credit card/ pay pal payments. 


Gear Requirements: Minimum 350N jacket, 350N plastron,  350N breeches, 350N mask, 350N glove. Chest protectors are compulsory for girls. Lame Foil bibs are not required however for those who compete at national level it is suggested they be worn.  Standard (non-FIE) blades are acceptable.  
Masks: Leon Paul X-Change Masks must have a  secondary Strap/Bar. All masks must be in good condition. The elastic strap shall be in good working order with elasticity and be able return to its original position after stretching, without deformation. The hook and loop securing the elastic shall be capable of retaining the elastic and resisting removal.
Gloves: All gloves must be in good condition. No hole is permitted for wires
Weapons: Standard (non FIE) blades for foil and epee, S2000 or above for Sabre blade
Leon Paul - All SR71 Epee Blades (2013-2015) are banned.

Weapons Check: Weapons will be checked with weights and gauges on the piste before each bout.

8am Men’s & Women’s Sabre Registration
8:15am Sabre starts
9:15am to 9:30am Men’s Epee & Women’s Epee Registration 
9:45 am Epee Starts
2:30pm to 2.45pm Men's/ Women's Foil Registration
3:15pm Foil Starts*
* Foil will start once Epee is finished 

PLEASE NOTE: There must be at least four competitors for an event to be run
