Fencing  Mid South Secondary School Championships 2023

Eligibility: This competition is for Year 9 to Year 13 students who are enrolled in high school, correspondence school or are home schooled. If you are a year 8 student who is enrolled in a school that teaches up to year 13 please talk to your coach to see if you are eligible to fence in this competition. 

Participants must be current affliated members of Fencing New Zealand  (ie: have paid their membership fee for the 2023 year).

Format: This competition will have both individual and school team events.  Foil, Epee and Sabre will be fenced.

Individual Event:  First Round: poules with bouts to 5 hits.

Second Round: Direct Elimination to 15 hits.  B rounds will be fenced if there is enough fencers. 

Separate events will be held for Boys and Girls as long as there are 4+ competitors in each gender. Depending on entries  a novice section for those fencers who have either started fencing in 2023 maybe fenced.  Encourage your school mates to come to this competition too.

Teams Event : 3 fencers per team + 1 reserve.(teams do not need to have a reserve)  Format will depend on how many teams are entered. Teams may be all boys/girls or mixed as long as fencers are all from the same school. Teams will be ranked from placings in the individual event.

Medals/Trophies:

Individual Competition: Medals will be awarded for first, second, third/ third equal depending on numbers.

Team Competition: Medals will be awarded for first place. Certificates will be given for second and third placed teams.

  • Mid South Secondary School Individual Boys’ Epee – the Spackman Trophy
  • Mid South Secondary School Girls’ Foil Teams – the Olga Jekyll Tray
  • Mid South Secondary School Master of Arms (For best results across 3 weapons)

Entry Fee:

Individual Competition: $30 per weapon.

Entries close Friday 11th August, 8pm. 

Entry fees are to be paid at time of entry. Mid South's preferred payment method is by  internet banking.

Team Competition: $20 per team. 

Entry Fee for team competition is to be paid on the day when team members are known. 

Gear Requirements: Minimum 350N jacket, 350N plastron,  350N breeches or tracksuit pants, 350N mask, 350N glove. Chest protectors are compulsory for girls. Lame Foil bibs are not required.  Standard (non-FIE) blades are acceptable.

350N+ Mask. All masks must have the new strapping system and have good quality elastic. Leon Paul Contour-Fit masks must have a secondary strap  security fitting at the back. Visor masks are not acceptable. 

Gloves- Must have no hole for body wires.

Bayonet and 2 pin body wires accepted.

Leon Paul SR-71 blades that are stamped 08-2012 to 06-2015 will not be accepted. Leon Paul V blade stamped 08-2012 to 06-2015 without a unique serial number will not be accepted. (currently banned by Fencing NZ). 

Sabre: S2000 or later required. Visor Masks will not be accepted. Curly mask wires are not accepted.

8am - 8.15am      Men's Foil Individual registration

8.30am                Men's Foil starts

9.am-9.15am      Women's Epee Individual registration

9.30am               Women's Epee starts

12.30-12.45pm   Teams registration

1pm approx         Men's Foil Teams & Women's Epee Teams start (but after individual finals)

2 -2.15pm            Sabre Individual registration

3pm                     Sabre starts (or sooner if all competitors are available)

Sunday 13 August

8am - 8.15am      Men's Epee Individual registration

8.30am                Men's Epee starts

9.am-9.15am      Women's Foil Individual registration*

9.30am               Women's Foil starts*

12.30-12.45pm   Teams registration

1pm approx         Men's Epee Teams & Women's Foil Teams start (but after individual finals)

* If there are not enough competitors for separate boys and girls events the mixed foil competition will start at the Men's foil time- Saturday 12th August, 8.30am. Competitors will be notified by email of this change once entries have closed.

Rule Changes:  FIE rule t.124, Non-Combativity rule will be implemented at this competition. 

There is a continued risk of COVID-19 in the New Zealand community, therefore the following guidelines will be followed:

● Fencers, coaches, officials, and spectators who are sick or have any COVID-19 symptoms should withdraw from the competition and stay away from the venue.

● Fencers, coaches, officials and spectators who have recently tested positive for COVID-19 are to isolate and stay away from the venue.

● The change to rule t.122 will apply. Fencers do not have to shake hands of their opponent or the referee on the piste but can salute instead.

● Hand sanitiser will be available for use before fencers start poules & DE rounds.
