The course is for novices and focuses on boating safety, NSW Boating regulations, low speed close quarters handling, navigation and seamanship, docking, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations.

 

The course runs from 9am - 4pm and includes theory sessions and practical handling / skills work. We make sure you have enough practical boat skills to get your NSW General Boat License. 

 

Our vessels have the required safety gear, inflatable lifejackets and spray jackets for your use. Eastsails’ training vessels include:

 

  • A custom built 8m tender with twin 115hp counter rotating outboard engines.

  • An Arvor Weekender 23’ with an inboard 150hp engine bow thruster.

  • A Haines Hunter 445R runabout with a 50hp 4 stroke outboard engine.

 

Eastsail conducts this course in our classrooms or aboard the boats for practical sessions.  

 

We will show you through the 12m (40ft) Riviera 4000 Cruiser to ensure you understand what a larger cruiser looks like, the safety, engineering and interior space.

 

Lunch break is for 30 minutes, food is not included but our marina has a cafe and toilets. 

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Attendees must be at least 18 years old or 12 years old accompanied by a parent or carer (student)

  • Previous boating experience is not required
     

  • What to bring:

  • Sunblock, hat and sunglasses with safety strap

  • Water bottle, lunch and snacks

  • Pen and notepad

  • Dress appropriate to the weather but note in can be cooler on the water. bring a spray jacket or you can borrow one from us.

 

How to gain your NSW Boat Licence

 

You can apply for a NSW Boat Licence with Roads and Maritime Services after completing this course. You will need to take the certificate you receive on this course together with photo ID and the licence fee to Roads and Maritime Sydney City or Rozelle.

Course Overview
Your powerboating pathway begins here, introducing you to practical driving skills, trip planning, boat maintenance, safety equipment and dealing with emergency situations. In some instances, you can take your completion certificate to your State Maritime Regulator and gain the State Boat License. 

Course Prerequisites

Water confident.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to drive a powerboat, following the course you will have sufficient skills and knowledge to skipper a small powerboat. All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.

Course Outcome

You will gain your Start Powerboating completion certificate.
