With the introduction of division 2 Derwent had one of its most successful and enjoyable seasons in the women's masters competition in a very long time. It was great to see familiar faces back as well as so many new ones. Overall it was a tight competition however the team showed great strength and team work and was able to score a win in the Grand Final to take the first division 2 Women's Masters Premiership.
Derwent dominated in the opening rounds scoring solid wins in rounds 1-5. These results put the team in an early commanding position however we had a bit of a wobble at the midpoint of the roster with a few unexpected losses to University and DiamondBacks. This threw the division wide open and it was anyone's guess as to who would eventually finish on top. All games were played with great intensity and good sportsmanship.
The Grand Final played against University was an epic battle to the finish and after two periods of extra time the game was eventually decided by penalty shoot outs. Yonna Pankiw was absolutely amazing in defending our goals. Congratulations to all of the players, everyone played hard in every game and from all accounts enjoyed the season thoroughly.
A special thank you and acknowledgement goes to Molly Mccausland for her commitment to umpiring us each week. It is also important to acknowledge Emily Foster who offered the team coaching support and somehow managed to keep the bench under control.
