Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta 7-10 June

Published Tue 28 May 2024

Whilst Darwin is basking in glorious warm sunny days, 10 adventurous (or maybe mad) NT women are heading south next week to battle the chilly Melbourne winter elements to compete in the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR).

The AWKR has been running every year for over 30 years, hosted by the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda.  This year there will be over 30 yachts competing with approximately 200 participants.  There will be strong representation (6) of the S80 one design yachts of which DSC’s skippers Jenny Simondson and Fiona McManus will be helming with their crews:

Jenny on Outlaw with Michelle Batenburg, Korin Lesh, Dominique Lynch & Toni Crew.

Fiona on Mood Indigo with Christine Knight, Jayna Gordon, Pippa Debeaux & Francene Anderson.

The DSC’s ex Sailing Instructor, Kate Hyde, is also helming in the Regatta.  Watch out for Kate in Liberator (a Jutson 39).

Also amongst the fleet will be Wendy Tuck, (first female skipper to win a round-the-world yacht race) and Karyn Gojnich (3 x Olympian).  The yachts are lent to the teams participating for which the crews are very grateful.

For more information on the AWKR, including results, check out the RMYS website:  https://www.awkr.com.au/

The NT teams wish to thank and acknowledge NT Shade who have generously provided sponsorship for the teams to travel to this event.
