Thank you Coach Joe

Published Fri 30 Jul 2021

It is with a heavy heart and a great deal of sadness that we announce that Joseph “Joe” Alia passed away at 11:20 pm on Wednesday 21 July 2021.

Coach Joe Alia

Coach Joe started dragon boating in 1983, when there was an exhibition dragon boat race as part of the Moomba celebrations. In recent times, Joe has been coaching the CYSM Sea Dragons from 2005 until his retirement in 2019.

Coach Joe's philosophy was never about winning but being the best that we could be and he provided the tools to ensure that we could achieve that. Winning was the consequence. He leaves a lasting legacy.

CYSM Sea Dragons thanks Coach Joe for all that he has given to the sport, whether as a paddler, coach, Victorian Dragon Boat Association (now called DBV) board member, official or volunteer. Our thoughts and love go to his partner Connie, his family, and his paddling family, whether that be in dragon boating or in canoeing/kayaking, as he has devoted a large amount of time with them both.

We will miss you so much Coach Joe. Your legacy lives within the team and we will always remember your wise words:

“Don't look back after your stroke. It’s history. Paddle forward".
