Tonight I had the greatest pleasure to attend the DBV Season 2016/17 awards night. To echo the words of the 2016/17 DBV President and our very own, Phillip Chan, tonight was a night to celebrate, recognise and have fun for what was a massive season 2016/17. We were treated with fun trivia and games, there was due acknowledgement of the great work of our state and club boards and committees, and the tireless efforts of volunteers.
A touching presentation was made to seven dragon boaters (three of whom were present on the night) who became life savers (quite literally) in the revival of a fellow paddler following a heart arrest during a regatta last season. A fully recovered, healthy and appreciative Paul (Dragon Masters) was there to give out certificates and pins to his life savers.
As for the awards, on behalf of the entire team, I want to say just how very proud we are of all our members who were nominated. You are all very deserving nominees and hearty congratulations. They are as follows:
- Coach of the year (club level) – Coach Joe Alia
- Sweep of the year (Metro) – Chris Phoumsavanh
- Male Paddler of the Year (Metro) – Carlos Diz
- Female Paddler of the Year (Metro) – Catherine Besido
- Presidents Rising Star Award – Eric Cham
Our coaching and leadership group are the backbone to our strong team and each played a vital role in our stellar 2016/17 season, culminating at AusChamps2017. Against some very strong competing nominees, Coach Joe and Captain Carlos prevailed.
A silent auction was also held on the night to raise some funds in support of the Auroras national team (including our Captain Carlos) who head off to China soon to complete. We wish them well in their preparation and the best of luck on competition day.
