SAFETY

  • SLIP, SLOP, SLAP!
  • Can you swim? If not, don’t fall off!  If so, we’ll come back (Stay on the boat!)!
  • PFD’s- Right arm in, pull over the head.  Zip, Clip and Pull.
  • Step on to the boat- No jumping!
  • Three points of contact- Two feet one hand, two hands one foot?  Balance is key.
  • BOOM!  Hurty things need to be kept simple.  Stay seated, head down, eyes up.
  • Ropes- follow instructor's call.  Too heavy, let go!  Keep hands/fingers out of winches and pulleys!

Lets all enjoy the day, but keep the indulging to a minimum before on water activities!

SAILING BASICS

Prepare to learn another language!

  • Wind direction-  Where is it coming from?
  • Points of sail- No Go zone=45ºeither side of the wind direction.
  • Tacking- Turning the front of boat through the wind.
  • Gybing- Turning the back of boat through the wind.
  • Sails and Sheets- The boats engine and accelerator. Pull in to GO!  When in doubt let it out!
  • Tiller and Rudder- The boats steering wheel.  Want to go left?  Push Right…

Don’t worry, your instructor has this covered and will explain it at the boat and on the water!

We will all need to form teams prior to changing and fitting PFD’s.  I need you all form groups of 4 behind each boat number- PLEASE note- all teams need to be even- lets split sailors sizes to ensure fair training and racing!  If you have someone in the room who you want to sail we can accommodate that! After completing the training please let your instructor know if you are keen to race the twilight, you will be given a wristband.

ON DOCK:

  • Safety talk- boom, ropes, winches, moving around.  Prep halyards for dock in/out!!
  • Getting on and off the boat.  Balance is key, keep watch for boom flapping around
  • Sails- sheet in/out- demonstrate loading jib sheet onto winch, and how to release
  • Tacking- steps, sheets, crew movements, boom!
  • Gybing- steps, sheets, crew movements, boom!
  • Rotate positions and practice- pending wind give those who want a chance to steer.

Racecourse needs to be set before the fleet hit the water! ( DG/DR to prep and set??)
