Pre Xmas (C1) Competition - Heat #2

A gusty south easterly powered Saturday’s heat of the Club’s Pre-Xmas Competition Series.    Ranging everywhere from 5 and 12 knots and never in the same direction for more than a minute or two, crews were kept busy constantly trimming and steering their boats in what proved to be some of the toughest and competitive sailing of the season.

Officials scheduled two races over the standard easterly course (Bridge, Marina, Convent, Marina, Rowing Club, finish) and all marks were rounded to starboard.     Race 1 was a quick single lap taking around 20 minutes to complete.   Race 2 was a more gruelling affair with two laps in a stronger breeze that gave everyone a solid workout.   The fleet sailed in two divisions (monohulls and catamarans) with separate starts but over the same course.

Lasers again dominated the Monohull Division with some of the tightest competition seen yet in this series.  Less than 30 seconds separated the fleet in Race 1 and not much more in Race 2.     Deb Parkin followed up from her double win last week by narrowly taking out the prize in Race #1 – just three seconds ahead of Neil Burgess.   Some top sailing by these skippers who utilised the constantly changing breeze to their advantage.   Peter Zietsch was next home in third.    Race #2 was a three cornered contest between Neil, Peter and Dennis Boyd.   Neil got away to a great start but was constantly under threat from his rivals.    Only metres separated the group until the final mark.  From here they split as each plotted a separate course to the finish.   Dennis steered towards the southern side of the river, Neil mid-stream and Peter along the northern bank.   By the time they re-converged just short of the finish, Neil had the advantage and crossed the line in first place.   The battle for the minor placings was no less intense with Dennis coming in next – just one second ahead of Peter in third.   Racing doesn’t get much better than this.   NS14 crew Mark and Noah Harris clocked their best times yet and continue to improve rapidly.

In the Catamaran Division, Arrow skipper Tony Rose claimed the prize in both races.   This nimble 14 footer is perfectly suited to the highly variable conditions experienced on Saturday and has a yardstick rating envied by the bigger cats.   A great result to Tony.    Hobie 18 crew Lindsay Cowan and Tansie Higgins took out second place in both races and enjoyed some exhilarating sailing during the bigger gusts.  Dave Price took out the bronze in Race 1.   Sailing a fast and powerful A Class cat, Dave also claimed line honours in both races.   Third place in Race 2 went to Nacra 16 skipper Ben Higgins.  Great to see Ben on the podium and expect more of the same as the competition progresses.   Mosquito crew Greg Lee and Deb Michell made easy work of the challenging breeze and notched up a very respectable fourth and fifth place.

A big thanks to race official Bob Fish and boat driver / photographer Dan Parkin.
