CHILDRENS LEARN TO SAIL COURSE February 2025
Coffs Harbour Yacht Club (CHYC) is an accredited Discover Sailing Centre offering Start Sailing 1 courses.
This course will introduce sailing to children 8-14 year olds and develop the skills to allow for single handed dinghy sailing. The children learn in CHYC-owned Optimist, Sabot and Pacer sailing boats. The courses are tailored to the children’s learning needs and are a fun way to learn sailing.
Participants will learn how to sail a dinghy in a safe environment and be provided the skills to develop and progress in the sport by our experienced instructors. Participants should be water confident and able to swim.
Run four weekend mornings from 9.30-12pm on Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd February, Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th February. In case of any bad weather the backup session is Saturday 1st March 9.30-12pm. Please be available for all course dates.
$200 per participant
What do you need to bring with you?

You need to bring wet weather gear including footwear that can get wet and a sun hat. A wetsuit or board shorts and rash shirt or t-shirt are recommended.

A towel and a change of clothes.

We supply training boats and training materials.

Note to Parents and Caregivers: Sailing is a wonderful sport for the whole family. No matter the age of your child it requires family involvement. Don't worry you dont need to know how to sail but you need to be willing to get your feet wet, drag a boat up the beach or help wash the boats. We request that a parent or caregiver remains in the vicinity of the Yacht Club during the course times.
At the conclusion of the course the participant will receive:
- 3 month Coffs Harbour Yacht Club sailing membership.
- 3 month use of club boats on Saturday mornings.
- Participation in the Skill Development Training sessions that run most weeks on Saturday between 9.30-12pm. Skill development training includes on and off the water assistance, advice and instruction by experienced sailors.
Course Overview
This course introduces participants to dinghy sailing and its fundamental skills so they learn terminology and equipment and practice launching and returning to shore and capsize recovery.

Water confident.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a dinghy. All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Sailing 1 completion certificate.
We recognise that some of our course participants are completing the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and may be using sailing and/or club membership to complete one or more sections of The Award. To learn more, click here.
