Introducing the CBVA Elite Open 1 Tournament
Prepare to kick off the winter season in a stylish manner with the unveiling of the CBVA Elite Open 1 by the Coogee Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) on Saturday, 29 June 2024. Tailored specifically for the finest talents in beach volleyball, this event caters to AAA/AA elite players who are eager to demonstrate their prowess and love for the game on the Coogee Beach sands.
This exhilarating addition to our competitive schedule aims to raise the bar of play and provide a stage for top-tier athletes to shine. The CBVA Elite Open promises to deliver an electrifying spectacle for both participants and spectators alike.
Participation in the event will be limited to 12 AAA/AA Men’s teams and 12 AAA/AA Women’s teams on a first-come, first-served basis upon registration and payment, with a maximum capacity of 12 teams (with 2 teams on a waitlist). Further essential event details are provided below.
Note: CBVA will schedule a 'Social Open' event for A-B level players later in August 2024.
📢Important Event Details
Date: Saturday, 29 June 2024
- 7.30am ALL PLAYERS on the beach to help the setup of Court 1, 2, 4 and 5
- 7.45am – 7.55am: ALL PLAYERS meeting and all teams drawn for Court allocations for round 1
- 8am: 10-min warm-up
- 8:15am: First round games commence.
Venue: Coogee Beach
Target Participants: AAA/AA elite players (maximum 12 Men’s and 12 Women’s teams)
Seeding: The determination of seeding will be entrusted to the CBVA Tournament Sub-Committee.
Team Registration: Teams will enter the event on a first-come, first-served basis upon registration and payment. with a maximum capacity of 12 teams (with 2 teams on a waitlist).
Registration Opens: Sunday, 16 June 2024, at 5:00 PM AEST.
Registration Closes: Registration will remain open until 5:00 PM AEST on Sunday, 23 June 2024. However, registration may close earlier if the maximum team limit is reached.
Payment: All participating teams are required to pay upon registration. In case of overbooking, waitlisted teams will be refunded. Cost: $20 per player (CBVA member) or $30 per player (Non CBVA member). Please note that withdrawals made before the registration deadline at 5:00 PM AEST on Sunday, 23 June 2024, will be eligible for a refund. However, after this deadline, no refunds will be issued.
Prizes: Prize money for winners and runners-up will be equally split between both genders (1st place $200 per team, 2nd place $150 per team, 3rd= prize vouchers)

Rules & Equipment:
- All players must be a current Full (or equivalent) Member of Volleyball NSW or other Australian State Volleyball Association.
- Use of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Official Rules (current).
- The official ball used for the CBVA Elite Open will be the Mikasa Beach Pro BV550C.
- All players will be required to perform the roles of a duty team during an event.
- Penalties for not fulfilling duty requirements at the discretion of the CBVA Tournament Sub-Committee and team may not be allowed to enter another tournament in future.
Competition Format:
- One Men’s and Women’s division will be composed of 12 teams.
- It is a rolling format; games must begin 5 minutes after the previous game has ended.
- Match format is 21/21/15 (change of ends 7/7/5). Matches are won when a team wins 2 sets.
- Teams are seeded into 4 pools of 3, and the top 2 teams progress into single elimination. Where necessary, rally point ratio will be used and then drawing of lots will be used to determine finalists.
- Teams in each Pool are seeded 1st to 3rd.
- Teams will verse the two other teams in their pool.
- Teams who finish 1st or 2nd will proceed to the Quarter Finals.
- Teams who finish 3rd will have an extra game to be placed 9th or 11th in the competition.
- The winners of these games progress to the Semi Finals.
- Gold Medal Matches.
- Bronze medal playoffs will not be played, and teams will record a result of equal 3rd.
- The Tournament Director may alter the match format to ensure the completion of an event.
Withdrawal and changing of players:
Before entries close:
- A team withdrawing will receive a full refund.
- A team may request a change of players in writing to tournaments@cbva.org.au.
Once entries have closed:
- A refund will NOT be provided for teams withdrawing that are deemed by the CBVA Tournament Sub-Committee to not have a medical reason or a special case. Proof of reasoning maybe be requested (e.g. medical certificate).
- A change of players in a team is only permitted if there is a medical or special case reason.
- A reseeding of the event will take place at the discretion of the CBVA Tournament Sub-Committee.
- Any impacts to the draw or seeding due to withdrawals or change of players will be made at the discretion of the CBVA Tournament Sub-Committee all athletes will be informed at the Players Meeting.
Uniforms: Suggest that all participants consider wearing coordinating uniforms during the event, though it's not mandatory.
