Course information
Building on previous knowledge from Start Sailing 1 & 2, this course provides participants with the opportunity to improve their sailing and boat handling skills and gives an introduction to club racing. It is ideal for members who have purchased their own Sabre, ILCA (laser) or Aero dinghy and have learnt the fundamental skills, but who are not yet ready to sail on their own or ready for club racing. Members without a dinghy also have the opportunity to join the course, pairing up with another sailor while sailing one of the Club's pacers.
Sailors are welcome to repeat this course building their skills and confidence until they feel ready to join Club racing here at Blairgowrie.
The content covered includes:
- Introduction to basic fitness principles
- Guided practice of boat handling skills
- Basics of Sail theory and sail trimming
- Introduction to the components of racing and the concept of racing as a perfected performance
- Race starting techniques
- Manoeuvring around marks efficiently
- Major factors affecting sailing to windward
- Downwind sailing and boat handling, running and reaching
- Introduction to the racing rules of sailing
- Teamwork
This is a Club subsidised course, and available only to BYS members.
Sailors should have their own basic sailing gear to wear, including a well-fitting lifejacket (type 2).

Water confident and you should have the skills, knowledge and experience gained from the Better Sailing course.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to learn the basics of racing and begin competing at club-level races.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Racing (Dinghy) completion certificate.
We recognise that some of our course participants are completing the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and may be using sailing and/or club membership to complete one or more sections of The Award. To learn more, click here.
