About

Black Mountain Rowing Club was established in 1965 a year after the lake was filled.  It has an interesting history having changed its name a number of times over the years, however its roots have always remained firmly in place via the Club livery and the spirit of ‘enjoyment of the sport and having fun’.  The Club was based in an old Nissan Hut located in the Kingston Boat Harbour (now the Kingston Foreshore) and operated out of this primitive facility until the early 1990s when it moved into its new boatshed on Black Mountain Peninsula.

During the time at Kingston the Club slowly moved from being school-based, involving Telopea Park High School and Narrabundah College, into a community club with a wide and varied membership base.  BMRC has steadily grown since its move to Black Mountain Peninsula.

BMRC is partner in a major project named the Red Shed. This wonderful new world-class rowing and fitness facility is located on Black Mountain Peninsula between the boat ramp and Radford Rowing Shed.

The Red Shed , with its highly innovative, eco-friendly and appealing design opened in July 2024.

It offers a wide range of community rowing programs at various levels along with other fitness and wellbeing opportunities, a public gym, indoor rowing, a public café (Café Sosta ) and a balcony upstairs overlooking LBG. A large event space with magnificent views is available to hire for weddings, corporate events and other gatherings. Income from the venue hire will go straight back into supporting Red Shed rowing programs.

The Red Shed aspires to be a great new lakeside 'destination' for the  Canberra community.

Black Mountain Rowing Club will occupy/row from part of the boat storage section of the Red Shed, but will continue to row out of its existing shed as well.

Exciting times for BMRC and for rowing in the ACT!
