Short and Long Range Radio Operators Certificates

Did you know that it is a federal offence to operate a marine radio without a licence?

Our radio courses will accredit you to operate a radio, but more importantly you’ll gain the knowledge to operate one correctly.

There are procedures and protocols used to communicate between boats that are often not well understood. Managing emergency traffic is a task that can change a life-threatening situation.

What does a “Mayday” mean? How do we warn others of danger? Who can we give a position to? How do you call another vessel? What happens when you push the big red button on your radio? All these questions are discussed and answered throughout this course. It concludes with an exam which gives you a nationally and internationally recognised certificate of proficiency This is also required when you want to acquire an MMSI number for an AIS, and we’ll explain what this means too! You’ll certainly be able to recognise who is using a radio but unlikely to be qualified!

We offer courses leading to either a short range (VHF) certificate (SROCP) over two evening sessions, or a long range marine (VHF and MF/HF) certificate (LROCP) over three evening sessions.

We offer 10% discount to BYC members. Use 'BYC' as the voucher code. Full course fees are:

SROCP (2 sessions) $190

LROCP(3 sessions) $250
