Dynamic Balance

Dynamic Balance for Life is an innovative program developed for older adults to avoid a fall if possible, and to learn to land safely in the event of a fall!

Adelaide University Judo Club (AUJC) collaborated with Adelaide University's G-TRAC Centre, to do an ethics-approved Pilot Study in late 2021. The study showed that this Introductory program developed by Adelaide University Judo Club is safe and feasible for older adults. The results of the study were published in April 2023 in The Journal of Frailty and Ageing

The Introductory program is delivered at AUJC several times a year, by experienced judo coaches who have been acredited in the course. Each session is 60 minutes, once per week. Each session is a combination of low intensity strength and balance work combined with learning to land safely from a fall and get up and down from the floor confidently. Class sizes are limited and enrollments are confirmed on a first-come basis. You can send us an Expression of Interest for the next Introductory programs if you wish to participate. Please download, fill-in and email to admin@aujudo.com.

Judo Australia, the peak body for judo in Australia, is a proud partner of Dynamic Balance!

AUJC participated in the inaugural International Consensus Confernce on Safe Falling for the Elderly through Judo, held in Tokyo in November 2023. The International Judo Federation (IJF) published a Consensus Statement in July 2024, a copy can be downloaded below.

In 2024, AUJC in partnership with the University of Adelaide research team were supported by a grant from The Hospital Research Foundation to run a larger clinical trial over 2 years on the effectiveness of the Program, as well as to upskill health professionals with no expereince in judo in delivery of the Dynamic Balance for Life program to older adults. Recruitment for this study is now open. Download the Study Flyers for details.
