The South Island Champs regatta at Lake Hood, just south of Ashburton, is the climax of the Aoraki Dragons season.
Racing comprises two heats and divisional finals over the 200m and 500m distances; followed by two or more flights of a one-off 2km turns race (i.e. four laps of the 500m course, with three left-hand turns). All racing is in 20-paddler boats, using start pontoons, up to six marked lanes and photo-finish timing equipment.
Besides medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in each division, there are also coveted trophies for the various divisional champions.
Teams should arrive at the lake at 7:30AM to get tents up etc., with race briefing at 8:30AM, to get racing underway by 9:00AM.
The event entry fee is covered by the team's annual subscription fee.
Food and drinks vendors are on site.
